I'm looking for cheap landline DDI VOIP trunking in India and Pakistan.

My server is only for recorded information for blind people and is
based in the UK, but I've been asked if I could provide a similar
service in Asia.

I could always spin up a mirror of the server in Singapore if geography matters.

I've looked around and found a couple mentioned in the Digium forums
and lists, but the companies have vanished since.

I don't know if it's OK to mention names on here. If not, please
privately email me, along with the reason why you think they might be
any good.

Otherwise, share the love and recommend away!

Thanks!

Jonathan,

You may have a real problem with this as VoIP that interconnects to the carrier is against the law in  India. There are 2 companies allowed to do it (both monopolies) and both have yet to request the license (almost a year after they were allowed to).

The only VoIP services that are legal are intercompany ones that do not connect to any other communications network. So those who offered the services have left the business.

Not sure about the status in Pakistan.

Thank you Eric,

That is disappointing, but I just want to confirm or clarify something: Are you saying that it is almost impossible to provide a DDI number, which will then trunk to my Asterisk server?

In which case, would I be right in thinking my only other option would be to find the cheapest country that Indians can dial, which also DOES allow DDI -> SIP and then do it that way round?

It's all starting to feel like a bit of a headache!

Hi Jonathan and Chris

For India, I have following this for a while, and I have found that the real problem is that since January 2015 they have been reevaluating the use of VoIP and OTT (Skype, Viber, etc.) in India. There is a recommendation to change the basic laws to allow more VoIP interconnect services as the current laws do not address it. (1)

From your point of view for now you need to keep things internal or inside 1 region in India and can not connect to an international VoIP service (so no you can not use a low cost country and route via it), but it is hoped that this should change this year or next as they get the laws to support modern technology.

This said, there are some companies advertising that they are either in India or connect to india even though the law has not changed.

Details:
Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) had issued a consultation paper on the issue when Rahul Khullar was the chairman. However, Khullar retired in mid-May (2015) before the recommendations could be finalised. [As of October] The current chairman R S Sharma is in the process of finalising the views. (2)

Current rules can be summarized as:(3)
Short version:  In the nutshell as per TRAI, no call routing should happen which are not in the interest of local PSTN service provider with respect to toll bypass.

Long version:
Quote:

Quote:
Regulations of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) require that voice traffic over the enterprise data network and the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) must be strictly separated and no mixing of calls between the two networks can occur for the purpose of toll bypass.

The following list shows basic scenarios that are restricted (that is, not allowed):

• The call that passes through a PSTN gateway connects directly by using WAN to a VoIP phone or VoIP PSTN gateway in a different geographic location.
– If PSTN gateway is located in India, this remains strictly restricted. If the PSTN is in another country and a VoIP phone is in India and if connection results in revenue loss to Indian telecom service providers, the connection gets considered restricted.

The following list gives basic scenarios that are permitted:
• Call directly between two VoIP phones in different geographic locations
• Call from a VoIP phone to a PSTN gateway in the same geographic location
A call that passes through a PSTN gateway must never connect directly to a VoIP phone or VoIP PSTN gateway in a different site or geographic location (geolocation) through use of IP telephony.
