We have just rent a few racks from a small Hong Kong based
Datacenter.
If anyone require off-site backup or adding servers in Hong
Kong then you
are welcomed to email me off the list to discuss the
detail.

Price per U is $35 USD and bandwidth is $60 USD per mb.
Price included APC remote reboot switch and limited usage
on KVM over IP>

Yes that the price in HK, HK is unlike USA or UK and many Europe countries
where bandwidth price is still quite costly.
However it is still one of the cheapest place in Asia to get bandwidth

Actually Mb/s, but yes, definitely bits. Notwithstanding that guy who
wrote "Telecom for Dummies", who doesn't think there's actually a

years.

Sam is using the right term!

When you get a MB in bandwidth you are getting 1 megabit per second

If you are talking about total dats transfer then of course it is megabytes

60 dollars is cheap, but not really, it depends on quantity and quality

For more info http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bandwidth_%28computing%29

Are we talking Mega Bytes ?
or Mega Bytes Per Second ?
Mega Bytes per month ?
or something else again?

I'm not sure what country you are comparing your bandwidth prices to, but you can buy high quality transit from Tier 1 providers for $15/Mb.

Also it doesn't make any logical sense at all to think that you use bytes rather than bits to communicate the total data transfer, it is simply a difference in units which at the end of the day should represent the same volume no matter what what you are talking about. Consumer geared language tends to use bytes more (browsers report download speed in bytes etc) but usually at the core everyone talks bits. ethernet is 10/100/1000/10000 mbits etc. If you called up a Verizon/ATT/NTT/Level 3 rep and asked them for a price on 100 mBytes/sec link they would likely send you over to their consumer DSL department until you figured out what you wanted.

When you get a MB in bandwidth you are getting 1 megabit per second

If you are talking about total dats transfer then of course it is megabytes

60 dollars is cheap, but not really, it depends on quantity and quality

Please, no. Conventionally, MB means Mega*byte* (possibly per second,
if it's obvious you're talking about bandwidth). Mb is mega*bit*, an
8:1 difference.

I would think that MB would imply a bytes transferred billing method.
The trailing s is vital because it shows bandwidth is billed by transfer
rate.

Since VOIP is bidirectional, you have to ask providers using bytes
transfer billing if they charge the total in and out.

I'm not sure what country you are comparing your bandwidth prices
to, but you can buy high quality transit from Tier 1 providers for
$15/Mb.

It's often more complicated that just which country the carrier is
offering pricing in. On the supply side, there are several factors
which will affect your *individual* offer of pricing for bandwidth,
such as

- Ease of delivery -- (long lined circuit to your office, vs.
Ethernet presentation to your colo in carrier hotel -- basically
mitigating the costs of transport)
- LEVEL OF COMMIT (Big one -- cost per Mbit if the customer commits
to 20Mb/s will be vastly different to that which will be offered for a
100Mb/s or 500Mb/s commit -- and in fact it may be cheaper to ask for
a huge commit to get pricing into the lowest possible band, and just
use a fragment of the capacity).
- Existing density of deployed ports in pop.
- Presentation technology (port speed, technology)
- Likely traffic profile of customer (how much transport required,
how much can be locally peered off for free)
- Reputation of carrier. Reputation of customer.
- Account managers' mood

On the demand side, there are usual factors that periodically affect
pricing, but since every single carrier will give you a different skew
to the routing table, and therefore vastly different performance to
the destinations you care about, you may be left in a situation where
your option to pick and choose between carriers is limited to the
extent that this has an upward effect on pricing.

With some creative thinking about how to approach effective routing,
redundancy and such, e.g. the use of partial routes products and SFI
to other local carriers, it is possible to build a superb IP network
in a major carrier hotel at a fraction of the price mentioned by Mike
at the top of this email.

This is the sort of thing I like to talk about and help with -- please
ping me off list if you want to talk more.

Best wishes
