Is Asterisk still dependent on the Zaptel timers? That was one of the
reasons I started using Callweaver in the first place - a dislike of
having to use extra kernel modules to pretend to be hardware I'm never
going to buy rather than simply using the standard timers provided by the
kernel.

Asterisk have done some good job solving this issue. You are not
bounded with zap timer device anymore, so you can easily deploy it in
virtual servers. I think that Callweaver was relevant some years ago
when there were big problems with asterisk but now, the future is
asterisk side (Disclaimer: I have deployed Callweaver and it is still
working great, so no offense to dev team who did a very good job! But
for my new projects I have switched back to asterisk.)

I have no opinion with Freeswitch as I have not worked with it (I was
a bit repelled with the xml config syntax...). The best advice is to
go what you are familiar with, depending on your needs.

Hope this will help.

Regards,
- vma.
