You can do it by setting BOTH peers
canreinvite=yes

If I understand correctly the question the RTP can be established directly
between the phones and does not have to pass through the Asterisk PBX. Just set
CANREINVITE=YES and use the same CODECs for both phones.

No, that is not correct. The RTP has to be established first to flow through
Asterisk, and only then may the RTP be renegotiated to flow direct. This
first step is NOT optional.
