The project was initiated to focus on several design goals including modularity, cross-platform support, scalability, and stability and the developers spend many hours a day making that happen. Today, developers and users contribute to the project on a daily basis.

What's changed in a year?

In fact, since last ClueCon the FreeSWITCH team has been extremely busy releasing the 1.6 video branch (now on version 1.6.9), releasing two maintenance 1.4 versions before transitioning the branch to end of life, rolling out officially supported Debian Jessie and CentOS 7 packages, and starting preliminary support for Ubuntu 14.04 and 16.04 packages. Additionally, there have been 1536 commits merged into the master branch since ClueCon 2015. That is a staggering amount of work for a small team and some community volunteers.
<![endif]--> <![endif]--> <![endif]--> <![endif]--> What does it do?

We support various communication technologies such as SIP, H.323, and WebRTC making it easy to interface with other open source PBX systems such as sipXecs, Call Weaver, Bayonne, YATE, or Asterisk. FreeSWITCH can perform full video transcoding and MCU functionality using its conferencing module. FreeSWITCH supports many advanced SIP features such as presence/BLF/SLA as well as TCP, TLS, and sRTP. It also can be used as a transparent proxy with and without media in the path to act as a SBC (session border controller) and proxy T.38 and other end to end protocols. FreeSWITCH supports both wide and narrow band codecs making it an ideal solution to bridge legacy devices to the future. The voice channels and the conference bridge module all can operate at 8, 12, 16, 24, 32, or 48 kilohertz in mono or stereo and can bridge channels of different rates. FreeSWITCH builds natively and runs standalone on several operating systems including Windows, Max OS X, Linux, BSD, and Solaris on both 32 and 64 bit platforms. FreeSWITCH even supports FAX, both over audio and T.38, and can gateway between the two.

So what does all of that mean?

All of that translates into several thousand man hours per year dedicated to debugging, updating/upgrading, testing, and maintaining the code that is already there. Those hours don't include the ever present push to remain on the bleeding edge and incorporate new features. With all the cool things that FreeSWITCH supports, you might be wondering, how do they possibly keep it all going? That comes down to community members like you. By attending ClueCon, you can help support the project in more ways than just financially. Having a week to get face-to-face with the community allows the developers to hear about what the community is doing with FreeSWITCH and what direction they need to go for future development. The presentations by leading industry innovators keep the attendees and the developers informed of the projects and ideas coming out of the community. The social activities do their part by allowing the core developers to informally interact with attendees. <![endif]--> <![endif]--> <![endif]--> <![endif]--> Other ways to support the FreeSWITCH project
